چکیده

This study evaluates the laser in situ scattering and transmissometry (LISST) instrument LISST-SL2, a diffraction for suspended sediment sampling rivers, with concurrent physical measurements of concentration (SSC) particle size distribution (PSD) as well velocity by an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). We collected 136 LISST-SL2 samples along 61 SSC measurement, which 24 included PSD measurement during 2018–2020 from 11 sites Washington state Virginia. An effective density is required to convert measured volumetric into reported mass SSC, default assumes value 2.65 g/mL. From our data set, we computed densities (mass SSC/volumetric SSC) that ranged 0.5 5.4 g/mL, best-fit 2.05 Additionally, was not able measure finest sizes suspension, affects resulting PSD. Therefore, propose some adjustments supporting sample account these issues. When doing so, were reduce root-mean square relative error (RMSRE) 18% 117% 26% 78% velocities generally higher than ADCP 21% RMSRE. Our results guidance will allow more accurate has potential studying spatial temporal variation characteristics rivers.

Measuring Particle Size Distribution Using Laser Diffraction: Implications for Predicting Soil Hydraulic Properties

Methods to predict soil hydraulic properties frequently require information on the particle size distribution (PSD). The objectives of this study were to investigate various protocols for rapidly measuring PSD using the laser diffraction technique, compare the obtained PSD with those determined using the traditional hydrometer-and-sieves method (HSM), and assess the accuracy of soil hydraulic p...

Effective particle size characteristics of fluvial suspended sediment transported by lowland British rivers

The alluvial flood plains of lowland Britain contain thick sequences of fine-grained sediment that result from the deposition of suspended sediment during flood events. These environments constitute important storage zones for a wide range of sediment-associated nutrients and con taminants and many of the geochemical properties of the deposited sediment are strongly related to particle size. R...

Measuring Suspended Particle Size with High Accuracy

The average particle size and its distribution are undoubtedly major characteristics of a powder, and the average particle size occurs in all correlations related to the powder behaviour in, e.g., packed, moving or fluidized beds, in pneumatic conveying and in dust filtration. When traditional sieving can no longer be used for smaller particles, instrumental techniques, i.e. particle size analy...
